PUNO
JULIACA
The
city of Juliaca is situated in southern Peru on the high plateau
adjacent to
Titicaca
Lake at 3800
meters above sea level,
surrounded by the snowcapped peaks of Lamparasi, Riticocha and
Balansani, which reach heights in excess of 5000 meters.
Puno
has a moderately cold and dry climate moderated by the great
body of water of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in
the world. It is the folkloric capital of Peru, due to the
typical musicians and dancers that can be found in any one of
the city’s neighborhoods. Nearby there are many
archaeological sites such as Sillustani, as well as the famous
floating Uros islands. The city is also close to the Bolivian
border, which can be reached by road or by boat.
Excursion
to the Uros Islands: Close
to Puno in the Titicaca National Reserve live several
communities descended from the Uros people, an ancient now
extinct race. They live on islands constructed with totora reeds
and live from hunting, gathering and fishing. Today the sale of
handicrafts contributes to their income. Visits are made in
comfortable tourist boats
Excursion
to Sillustani:
Located
35 kilometers from Puno on the shores of Lake Umayo, these
imposing burial towers, or chullpas, are up to 6 meters high.
Excursion
to Taquile Island: Taquile
was colonised by Quechua speakers during the Inca expansion and
is inhabited to this day by the six clans sent by the Inca, who
have conserved their language and culture for more than 500
years. Beautiful weavings, well-kept terraces and a friendly and
proud population await the visitor just three and a half hours
by boat from Puno. Boats leave at around 6:45 am and return at
about 6 pm
