SACRED
VALLEY OF THE INCAS
The Sacred Valley of the Incas is located between the Vilcanota and
Salkantay ranges at 2700 meters above sea level, and was a Holy
Land for its ancient inhabitants due to its rich agricultural
production, benign climates and scenic beauty, with the
Vilcanota river running through its heart and the imposing
snowcapped peaks that surround it.
Just 89 kilometers from Cusco lies the village of Pisaq, where the valley
tour begins with a visit to the typical market to buy
handicrafts and witness the Quechua mass at the village church. Then we continue along the banks of the Wilcamayu or
Vilcanota river, enjoying the magnificent scenery and
picturesque villages. We
lunch in the village of Urubamba, before continuing to the Inca
town of Ollantaytambo, a magnificent example of Inca urban
architecture, where we will visit the temples and military
installations. We
return to Cusco by Chinchero, a picturesque village where we
will visit the typical local market and the colonial church
built on Inca foundations, as well as the Chinchero museum.
